My name is Stephanie Karamitsos, visual artist from Kenosha, WI.  I am ‘Artist-in-Residence’ at Le Freak Art Salon, in Kenosha, WI.

Art is an integral part of who I am. My father not only brought me into the world in the usual sense; he left a glowing stamp “Destination Art-land” on my consciousness. Always lovingly but insistently dad guided my path, just as my inheritance of excellent eye/hand coordination was further provocation. Technically, I advanced with more than due speed. However, more importantly, my dad sought to feed my passion toward the artist’s world view, if you will.

Over time, my artistic development progressed with an MFA in painting from the University of Illinois at Chicago, then an interdisciplinary Performance Studies/Art History PhD from Northwestern University. The journey continued further on two European sabbaticals where I explored hundreds of art museums and galleries. But at this point, I was more of an artist-in-the-making relative to the present. And yet I worked my art “muscles” rigorously, applying to as many exhibition opportunities as possible. My efforts resulted in numerous opportunities for exposure around the US, and the beginnings of a good reception.

My time as a university instructor at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago, IL and at the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, IL were difficult but priceless. Designing and teaching my own courses was very exciting and challenging. I delved into critical and theoretical dimensions of the discipline with serious but occasionally uninitiated students. It was a fabulous period of growth for me and my students, but as the year 2011 advanced I was inextricably drawn to focus more exclusively on my own art practice. It came as an important phase for me, though teaching had been very rewarding as well. At long last, I was establishing myself more professionally as a working visual artist.
